Bundala national Park lies in the shadow of more known and much more visited neighbor – Yala National Park on Sri Lanca. Yala National park is closed in September, which is – thank God – totally natural, because animals have to rest from mass amount of tourists and jeeps that had been driving them around their own habitat. We decided for less crowded Bundala because of wild nature and birds that live there. In Minneriya National park near Sigiriya on North side of Sri Lanca we experienced seeing hundreds of elephants – The Gathering – so by going to another National Park in Sri Lanka we didn´t have big expectations or desires to see those giants in their natural habitat again.
Bundala is great because of its wild beauty and birds and reptiles all kinds. However, if you are looking for elephants – there are only few and it is better to choose some other national park on Sri Lanka where there is better chance of seeing them in their natural habitat. Our starting point to go to Bundala National Park was Tissamaharama, which is also beautiful. So you shouldn´t leave it out when traveling Sri Lanka, especially not its wild surroundings, nevertheless it is your starting point to Yala or Bundala National Park or not.
